Innovafeed

Innovafeed is a biotech company that specialises in the production of a new source of protein through the rearing of insects (such as Hermetia Illucens) for the animal feed and aquaculture sectors. There is a pleasant paradox in Innovafeed’s method; they have arrived at the cutting edge of new insect breeding models by returning to tradition.

That is to say, their process is based on a unique technological expertise that allows them to firmly embed the insect into the core of their agri-food system and restore it to its original place in our ecosystem: the natural recycling of nutrients that then go on to feed fish, birds, poultry and swine.

It is this out-of-the-box style of thinking that we particularly admire about this company; it gives them an unusually clear perspective regarding the state of the world. Saying that:

  1. Aquaculture will cover over 60% of the world’s fish needs by 2030 (FAO), and
  2. The growth in global demand for quality protein will increase by 40% in ten years,

they are working hard to develop new, sustainable solutions to meet these growing demands. Their ‘insect-fed trout’ approach is particularly noteworthy as it maintains high-quality production of fish while easing pressure on currently overfished oceans. In the wild, a trout’s diet integrates up to 50% of insects, so to include specially reared bugs in their meal plan is a true return to form. Furthermore, the simple act of introducing insect-based feed to the aquaculture sector halves the need for the wild fishmeal used in conventional feed. The nutritional profile of this feed is provably excellent; insect-fed fish (defined by Innovafeed as being fish whose protein feed was at least 50% insect meal) grew to over double their weight during the feeding stage of their life cycle.

Something we value greatly here at Project X is sustainability, a concept at the heart of our 10 in 10 mission. It is no surprise, then, that their short loop insect production model stood out to us. It is a model Innovafeed says it is especially proud of, and for good reason: all part of their larvae is used, to produce quality protein and oil from the insects, and an excellent organic fertiliser is produced in the form of their dung; a fertiliser that goes on to catalyse the production of 15 million tonnes of agricultural by-products every year in the north of France alone. It is, in short, a model that embodies the concept of zero waste in its circular logic.

It is an environmentally conscious model, too: Innovafeed decided to go even further and turn sustainability into an argument for competitivity. By collocating their production sites with existing industrial players, they enable to reduce their CO2 footprint by 80% which represents an annual economy of 57,000 T of CO2 per year – enough to drive around the earth 5800 times! Insects are fed on non-exploitative agricultural coproducts, locally valorised from a starch manufacturer. Furthermore, by enhancing the thermodynamic cycle of their neighbour energy player, they are able to capture rejected waste energy (i.e. energy that was previously dissipated into the air) to fuel their plant, which is therefore 100% powered with renewable energy.

Finally, traceability is ensured throughout the entire production chain, and the localised nature of their business model makes it possible to limit the harmful environmental impact associated with transport. In the context of a fast-growing world population, their work responds concretely and competitively to an increase in protein demand while contributing to the development of a more sustainable food system.

We are delighted to be working with Innovafeed and are glad to say the feeling is mutual. A representative of the company said the following:

“[The FEED-X Programme] has been very rigorous and [Innovafeed] is honoured to be amongst the finalists! We strongly believe insect protein fits the criteria set out by FEED-X for the future of the feed industry: disruptive, sustainable and scalable.”
